The male has a bright red plumage. During the coupling season, in summer, the male shows his vibrant red plumage in order to challenge rivals and for the nuptial display.
Except for the taming season, the small bird pecks nicely through the flatlands. Unlike the male, the female is a dull red-brown shade. The female is takes care of the nest construction, while the male, vain and carefree sings cheerfully.
The Madagascar Cardinal is mainly granivorous, but also feeds on insects.
