Traveller’s Palm :

l'arbre du voyageurIt is a species from Madagascar. The Traveller’s Palm is a member of the Strelitziaceae family.

It is not a tree, it is a herbaceous plant with feather-grass, and this is why it tends to be designated as being a palm. It has enormous paddle-shaped leaves, and the stems are able to hold rainwater. It can be seen from a long distance because of its funny shape.

The plant’s trunk grows up to 10 meters, and the whole plant can measure almost 20m. The flowers are big and white.

It provides edible oil, like the Shea Nut. Its vernacular name is due to the fact that the water kept in the tree’s stems can be used as a drinking supply by the travellers.
